Background of the Study
The well-being of elderly patients is heavily influenced by the care they receive from family members or professional caregivers. In Sokoto State, the elderly population faces numerous challenges such as poor healthcare access, limited social support, and inadequate caregiver training, all of which can impact their overall health (Mansur & Habib, 2023). Many elderly individuals rely on family caregivers for day-to-day support, but these caregivers often lack the necessary skills and knowledge to provide adequate care, leading to poor health outcomes (Sulaiman et al., 2023).
Caregiver training programs have been shown to improve the quality of care provided to elderly patients, resulting in better health outcomes, including reduced hospital readmissions, enhanced mental and physical health, and improved patient satisfaction (Oluwaseun & Gbemisola, 2023). These programs typically cover areas such as managing chronic conditions, medication administration, proper nutrition, and emotional support (Yusuf & Akinleye, 2024). However, caregiver training programs are underutilized in Sokoto State, and the effect of such programs on the well-being of elderly patients has not been extensively studied. This study aims to examine the impact of caregiver training on the well-being of elderly patients in Sokoto State.
Statement of the Problem
In Sokoto State, many elderly patients experience poor health outcomes due to inadequate caregiving, with caregivers often lacking the knowledge and skills needed to effectively manage their loved ones' health conditions. Caregiver training has the potential to improve the quality of care provided, but there is limited research on its impact on the well-being of elderly patients in this region. This study seeks to assess the effect of caregiver training on elderly patients' health and well-being in Sokoto State.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the effect of caregiver training on the health and well-being of elderly patients in Sokoto State.
To identify the key components of caregiver training that contribute to improved patient outcomes.
To examine the barriers to caregiver training programs in Sokoto State.
Research Questions
How does caregiver training affect the health and well-being of elderly patients in Sokoto State?
What are the key components of caregiver training that improve elderly patient outcomes?
What are the barriers to implementing caregiver training programs for elderly patients in Sokoto State?
Research Hypotheses
Caregiver training significantly improves the health and well-being of elderly patients in Sokoto State.
Elderly patients whose caregivers have received training show better physical and mental health compared to those whose caregivers have not been trained.
Barriers such as lack of funding, insufficient caregiver interest, and cultural norms limit the effectiveness of caregiver training in Sokoto State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on elderly patients aged 60 and above in Sokoto State, with a particular focus on those cared for by family members. Limitations may include difficulties in accessing caregivers and elderly patients in rural areas, as well as challenges in measuring the subjective aspects of well-being.
